Africa: Juveniles in Prisons

Kampala, Uganda
Prisoners attend a Pentacostal mass on the grounds of Murchison Bay Prison in Kampala, Uganda, November 18, 2006. Dozens of suspected juveniles are mixed with adult prisoners in prisons throughout Africa, but because of a lack of birth certificates, it is difficult for officials to ascertain who are juveniles, and because of a lack of resources, it is difficult to provide separate facilities for minors from adults.
